About Richard Strode MP
Family and Education b. 22 May 1528, 1st s. of William Strode of Newnham by Elizabeth, da. and h. of Philip Courtenay of Molland; bro. of William Strode I. m. 11 Nov. 1560, Frances (d. 7 Feb. 1562), da. of Gregory Cromwell†, 1st Baron Cromwell, 1s. William Strode II. suc. fa. 5 May 1579.

Biography The Strodes were an old-established and wealthy stannary family seated near Plympton Erie, where they were well able to secure their own return to Parliament. Strode was also connected with the 2nd Earl of Bedford, his sister Agnes having married Bedford’s agent Edward Yarde. In 1596 Strode and his father were rated for the subsidy at £30 in lands. Strode died 5 Aug. 1581, only two years after his father, leaving landed property worth over £60 p.a. to his son and heir William, aged 19. Strode’s will was proved 9 Sept. that year.

Richard Strode, of Newnham in the parish of Plympton St Mary, was an English Member of Parliament for Plympton Erle in 1553 and 1559. He later served as escheator for Devon and Cornwall from 1565–1566.
He was the eldest son of William Strode of Newnham and Elizabeth, daughter of Philip Courtenay. He married, on 11 November 1560, Frances (died 7 February 1562), daughter of Gregory Cromwell, 1st Baron Cromwell and Elizabeth Seymour by whom he had a son, William Strode.
