About Robert Terry Smith
Robert Terry Smith, the youngest son of Isaac and Sarah Waters Smith was born in DeKalb County, IN, October 24, 1866 and departed this life October 12, 1940. His age at this departure was 73 years, 11 months, and 18 days.
He was united in marriage to Brittie Lackey of Lawrence county, IL, Sunday March 29, 1891. This devoted wofe preceded him in death June 23, 1935.
To this union were born three children: Blanche McCarty, Charles A. Smith, and Clay V. Smith.
Eleven very successful terms of school were taught by Brother Smith in the eastern part of Lawrence County and at Bond school. Here in the schoolroom his devotion to his work was shown by giving his best to the advancement of the children.
After retiring as a teacher he chose the occupation of blacksmithing at Westport, IL. Here the "sounding anvil" was heard early in the morning and the "flaming forge" was seen late at night. Here, truly, "his fourtune was being wrought" by his sincere deeds and his honest toil.
He was a great Bible reader and often expressed his firm belief in that Book. A few months ago, while residing with his son, Charles A. Smith, he was stricken with paralysis. He never fully recovered from the stroke.
He leaves to mourn their loss: one daughter, two sons, one brother,Warren Smith; 23 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren, and a large number of relatives and friends.
