About Roger Gimbel
Television Producer. He was identifiable for his numerous memorable TV-Movie efforts during the 1970s and 1980s. Born in Philadelphia, a member of the prominent family which founded the Gimbels Department Store chain, he served in the European Theater with the US Army Air Forces during World War II. Upon returning home, he attended Yale University where he studied Economics and while there worked at their college radio. Following graduation, he was a reporter in Dayton, Ohio and entered the advertising industry, advancing to advertising manager with RCA Victor, and later with NBC Television. During the mid-1960s Gimbel turned to producing, beginning with the musical-comedy "Funnyland" (1965) and would serve as executive producer for a wide range of stories, including "A War of Children" (1972) which depicted two families who struggle to maintain their friendship during sectarian violence in Ireland (earning him an Emmy Award) and "The Amazing Howard Hughes" (1977) which recounted the life of the eccentric aviator and filmmaker. Among his other credits are "One in a Million: The Ron LeFlore Story" (1978) which compellingly portrayed the former Major League player with a troubled past, "Sophia Loren: Her Own Story" (1980) and "A Piano for Mrs. Cimino" (1982) starring the legendary Bette Davis. He was married to actress Jennifer Warren from 1976 until his death. Gimbel died from complications of pneumonia. (bio by: C.S.)
