About SN. Alicia Mary Chipper, MM, ARRC
"During World War I, Alicia Mary Kelly nursed hundreds of wounded from Gallipoli and the Somme. In 1917 she was at the No. 3 Australian Casualty Clearing Station at Brandhoek near Ypres when it was subjected to five days of heavy shelling and bombing. Ignoring advice to seek shelter in the dugouts, Alicia refused to leave her patients and was later awarded the Military Medal by King George V at Buckingham Palace for her actions. She was also awarded the Royal Red Cross for exceptional services in military nursing. Known to her family as ‘Loll’ Alicia was my second great aunt, sister of my great grandfather, Thomas Henry Kelly."
