About Salathiel Hibarger

Tuesday evening of this week, December 12th, 1905, one of our highly respected citizens died, Salathiel Hibarger, who was born in Sharpsburg, Maryland, Jan 28th, 1827. Mr. Hibarger came to Illinois with his parents in 1848 [notation "...before his parents in 1846..."] when 21 years of age, and settled on a farm in Mt. Morris township, with his parents, sisters and brothers of which there was quite a large family.

When Polo was first started Mr. Hibarger was one of the first to settle here, and he being a contractor and builder, has probably erected more houses and business blocks in this city than all the rest of the carpenters that ever lived here. He was an honest, upright, straightforward man in every sense of the word.

Mr. H. was first married to Miss Amelia Funk. Of this union only one child was born, Albert C. Hibarger, whose mother died four days after he was born. His second wife was Miss Mary Thurston, who survives him. Besides his wife and son he leaves two sisters and three brothers, being Mrs. Mary M. Reynolds of Ottawa, Ill.; Mrs. Emeline King of Broken Bow, Nebraska. His brothers re Adam Hibarger of Mt. carroll, Ill.; Frank D. of Hiawatha, Kansas; and Otho R. Hibarger of our city.

Brother Salathiel Hibarger was Initiated as an Entered Apprentice in November, and as a Fellow Craft in December, 1856, and was raised to the sublime degree of a Master Mason in January, 1857. He was treasurer of Mystic Tie Lodge No. 187, A.F. & A.M., for 37 years.

Companian Salathiel Hibarger was initiated as a Mark Master, Feb. 23d, Past Master, March 15th, Most Excellent Master, March 19th and the Holy Royal Arch, March 22d, 1869. He was Treasurer of Tyrian Chapter No. 61. R.A.M., for 39 years.

The funeral sermon was preached at his late residence by Rev. P.B. Holtgreve, Dr. J.H. More gave the prayer and made a few remarks and the interment was under the auspices of Mystic Tie Lodge No. 187 A.F. & A.M., Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock, and interment was in Fairmount Cemetery.

The pall bearers were J.L. Moore, D.V. Isham, Chas. Bush, Geo. Welch, A.A. O'Kane and W.G. Atkins.

Polo list another of her oldest residents and a substantial and respected citizen Tuesday evening of this week when Salathiel Hibarger passed away. Mr. Hibarger had been suffering for two years with heart trouble and a complication of diseases and his death had been looked for before but it seemed that his ambition to live was so great that he would not give up his life.
