About Sally Harrison Pickett
- Reference 541613 in https://archive.org/details/cartertreecompil00cart/page/82/mode/2up page 82
Birth: Aug. 8, 1829 Richmond City Virginia, USA
Death: Nov. 13, 1851 Texas, USA
Miss Minge, the first wife of General George Pickett, was the daughter of Dr. John Minge and Mary Griffin Adams Minge of Weyanoke Plantation near Richmond. Both families considered the match a suitable one. On 22 December 1850 George met Sally in Franklin, Louisiana. The wedding was on 28 January at St. Mary's Episcopal Church. According to family tradition the couple went to New Orleans for a wedding trip and stayed in the St. Charles Hotel. The majority of time was spent with Col. Richard A. Wiliness and Sally's sister, Margaret, at the Arlington Plantation on the Bayou Teche. (Church records verified this). Others inform us that Lt. George E. Pickett married Miss Sally at the residence of the bride's aunt, Mrs. Margaret Minge Watkins, January 28, 1851, in Attakapas, La. She died in childbirth after an Indian raid on the 13 Nov. 1851 at Ft. Gates, Texas. George took leave and escorted the bodies home to be buried at Shockoe Cemetery. She is buried in the Johnston Family Plot near George Pickett's maternal Grand parents. The cemetery cards tell us that the child is buried with her. Some have identified the infant as being a male. Miss Minge is the great great grandniece of U.S. President William Henry Harrison, and the great great granddaughter of Benjamin Harrison, who signed the Declaration of Independence
