About Samuel Ginz ha Levi

This amazing man is in both Epidat and the Worms Memorbuch (he is too early for the Gruene Buch). In Epidat wrm-1207 he is described on the beautiful stone as old and venerable, and his grandson, r’ Alexander, is buried at his feet. (I don’t yet know who Alexander’s parents were).

And in the Memorbuch (on page 6), Samuel haLevi Gunzburg is the one with all the detail, where there is the statement which at first sounded so confusing, but which means that he was the father of the mother of Simon von Gunzburg.

The only son I have found for him in Worms was (Moshe) Jacob, who died at an old age in 1572. He is in the Memorbuch on page 7 and is Epidat wrm-34. Jacob’s son, (Israel) Isaac, was a parnas in Worms and died 11 Adar 1592. He may be Epidat wrm-46, or possibly not. His wife was Miriam bt Baruch, and they had sons, Samuel and Baruch. I know these are not of direct interest to you, but I am mentioning the following situation because it is often mis-stated, and I think it is important that someone know about it (you).

(Israel) Baruch, son of parnas (Israel) Isaac and Miriam, died on 12 Av 1597, and his wife, Ester, died in 1604 (Gruene Buch p.65). They had at least two sons, but the one we are looking at here was Jacob. This Jacob haLevi Gunzburg was a parnas and he died in 1637. He is the Jacob Gunzburg who lived in the Taube, and his wife was a relative of yours, Kresel (bt Moshe) Honig, who died in 1651. By this time, several of the descendants of Simon von Gunzburg had settled in Worms, and they are right there alongside the Levite Gunzburgs. As luck would have it, (Shmuel) Jacob Gunzburg (son of Elieser and grandson of Simon) was also a parnas in Worms and also married a Honig. This Jacob (non-Levite) died 15 Nisan 1649 at an old age and had lived in the house of the Baer. His wife was Telze Honig, who died in 1636. Because these two Jacobs were contemporaries, and because they were both parnassim, and because they both married Honigs, people have mixed them up. But the combinations as I just gave them are correct, and are completely verified in the house lists.

In addition, for Telze Honig, who is, if I remember correctly, your ancestral aunt, there is a mistake in Kaufmann’s additions to the Memorbuch: He sees the Telze on page 13 “Telzche bt Meir Wallich” and identifies her as the wife (died Kislev 1632) of Jacob Ginz. This is due to a misreading of the year. Telze e’ Jacob Gunzburg died 4 Kislev 1636, as is confirmed by GB p.117. The Telze Wallich in the Memorbuch is really hazakineh Telze: Epidat wrm-1000 (died 3 Cheshvan 1673) bt Meir Wallich.

The Telze who really was the wife of Jacob Gunzburg zum Baern is on page 14 of the Memorbuch: mrt Telzchen bt haparnas r' Naftali Jehuda Honig [GB p.117 [Kaufm: e' haParnas Jacob Ginz Kislev 1636], so, as you see, Kaufmann caught his mistake, but forgot to go back and fix the Telze on page 13.
