About Samuel Klapper
Samuel Drucker was born in 1895 in Volin, Russia. He immigrated the U.S. in 1912 at age 17. Due to the language barrier, at customs he gave wrong answers, and was not allowed in the U.S. He returned to Europe on a ship sailing for England. In London he lived with a rabbi for two months. Meanwhile Sam's mother, Ida, contacted her sister in Philadelphia, Mime Bossie Klapper, to sponsor Sam to return to the U.S. So he sailed back on a ship landing in Philadelphia. His aunt was waiting for him at the dock. Afraid that he would not be allowed in the U.S., Sam gave his name at customs as Samuel Klapper. He lived with his aunt for several year, working in the family grocery store, the Busy Bee.
