Biography
SAMUEL STOCKBRIDGE was born in Scituate, 9 July 1679 son of Charles and Abigail Stockbridge. On 5 August 1703, Samuel married Lydia Barrel in Scituate. She was born 25 May 1684, the daughter of William and Lydia Barrell.[1][2]
In 1700, Abigail Turner, and her two sons, Benjamin Stockbridge and Samuel Stockbridge all of Scituate requested the appraisal of their portion of their father, Charles Stockbridge's estate.[3]
Samuel served the town of Scituate in many capacities. He was surveyor of highways in 1701, 1717, 1722, 1725, 1729, 1730, 1739, and 1742; tithingman in1703; fence viewer from 1714 to 1729; constable in1720; sealer of leather from 1722 to 1728, 1733, and 1736; moderator in 1727, 1730, 1733, 1738, and 1742; selectman and assessor in 1729 and 1730; and :surveyor of boards, planks, etc." from 1733 to 1735. He was a petit juror in 1701, 1723, 1738, and 1742, and a juryman on the inferior court in 1703 and on the superior court in 1707, 1717, 1731, 1732, 1742, and 1743.
In Scituate, Massachusetts on 20 July 1758 at the age of 79 Samuel passes away.[4] He is interred at the Stockbridge Cemetery, Norwell, Plymouth Co., Massachusetts.

Probate
The will of Samuel Stockbridge, of Scituate, yeoman was dated 6 February 1755 with a codicil dated 19 July 1758 and proved on 27 July 1758 in Plymouth. He mentions his wife Lydia, and his children, Persis (wife of Daniel Tower in the codicil), Abiel, Abigail Turner, the children of his daughter Lydia Soper, decd., late wife of Joseph Soper, Samuel Stockbridge, and his grandson Joseph Benson.[6]
His inventory was taken on 6 November 1758 in Scituate.[7]
In 1758, an account of his estate was recorded which included the guardianship of Joseph Benson, debts paid, and administration fees.[8]
