About Sara Silverman
SILVERMAN (PASCAL), Sara SILVERMAN (PASCAL), Sara - 94, Halifax, passed away March 21, 2004, in the New Halifax Infirmary, QEII. Born in Montreal to the late Harry and Fanny Pascal, Sara enjoyed a long and full life. Sara is survived by Julius, her husband of 71 years; sons, David (Carol Ann) and Allan (Vangie), Halifax; grandchildren, Lori Silverman, Vancouver; Jennifer Silverman, Toronto; Craig Silverman, Montreal; Shira Gittleman (Bob), Sacramento; Rabbi Barry Feder (Roshanna), New Jersey; Corrine Merksamer (Jon), Sacramento; Anne Sayah (Paul), New Jersey; 13 great-grandchildren; her sister, Lillian Newman; several nieces and nephews. Sara was predeceased by her daughter, Carol Feder; son-in-law, Arnold Feder; brother, Max Pascal; sisters, Blanche Medjuck, Charlotte Flagg, and Claire Hoffman. Sara was a warm, generous and gracious lady, devoted to her family and active in Jewish organizations and the Shaar Shalom Synagogue of which she was a founding member. She was a life member of Halifax Hadassah and chaired the first Halifax Hadassah Bazaar and Exposition. Through her study of the violin, she met and soon married Julius Silverman, a former concert master of Symphony Nova Scotia. Sara was always at Julius' side as a loving and supportive wife, working and traveling with him, and dedicated to the musical life of Halifax. Sara and Julius entertained and hosted many receptions and functions for guest artists and the Symphony at their former home on Inglewood Drive. Sara served on the Auxiliary of the Halifax Symphony Orchestra, as President of the Halifax Ladies Musical Club and was a Charter and Honourary Member of Women for Music. Sara enriched the lives of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, all of whom were very special to her. A memorial service will take place in Shaar Shalom Synagogue, Oxford and Pepperell Streets today at 1 p.m. Shiva will be held at 5945 Inglewood Dr. on Wednesday, March 24, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., and on Thursday, March 25, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Symphony Nova Scotia, Julius and Sara Silverman Scholarship Fund at the Maritime Conservatory of Music, and Shaar Shalom Synagogue.
