About Sarah Martin

Sarah's ancestry

1. Sarah Baker wife of Benjamin Martin was probably born in the early 1740s in Orange Co., VA. Her father is found in numerous Orange records in the 1740s.

2. Bartholomew Baker Jr. was possibly the son of Bartholomew and Elizabeth but not found in parish records along with their other children. 'British Mercantile Claims' connect him to son in law Benjamin Martin and say he moved to one of the southern states before the war.

3. Bartholomew Baker Sr. born 1673 in Charles River Parish to Samuel and Constant according to parish records. His wife Elizabeth was pregnant when he wrote he wrote his will in 1722.

4. Samuel Baker may be the Samuel age 24 in a 1672 deposition in York Co., VA. 3 children are listed in Charles River Parish register born to Samuel and Constant. Administration of his estate was granted to Edward Reyley who had married Samuel's widow. The will mentions land that was a deed of gift from his uncle Bartholomew Wethersby which is outside present day Newport News.

This uncle Bartholomew seems to have been a son of Bartholomew Wethersbie who is found in the muster of inhabitants of Virginia in 1624/5. It may be that Samuel's mother was an unknown daughter of Bartholomew Sr. Major record losses in Jamestown and Elizabeth City County make it difficult to establish more connections between the Baker and Wethersby families.

Constant is believed to have been Constant Matthews probably because both of them witnessed an estate record for James Calthorpe in 1671. The will of Richard Sables probated in York Co. in 1679 says that pewter at the home of son in law Samuel Baker was to be divided between the testator's children Richard, Constance and Mary.
