About Sarah Frances Mudd
Sarah Frances 'Frankie' Mudd (Dyer)
This small book is a biography of Sarah Frances Dyer Mudd, the wife of Dr. Samuel A. Mudd, one of the eight persons convicted in the 1865 Lincoln assassination trial. It complements the author's larger complete biography of the life of Dr. Mudd, entitled The Assassin's Doctor.
Much has been written about Dr. Mudd and his involvement with John Wilkes Booth and the Lincoln assassination, but little about his wife Sarah. This book attempts to fill that void. It tells the story of Sarah's life growing up on the Dyer family farm, her education and marriage, her struggles during her husband's trial and imprisonment after the Lincoln assassination, and her life afterwards. It also tells of the lives of Sarah's sisters and brothers, and the lives of her nine children.
This is the story of a woman who would have been content to live a quiet and anonymous life as the wife of a country doctor, but was instead drawn unwillingly into one of the most public and tragic events in American history, the assassination of president Abraham Lincoln.
