Married First (1) Lydia Hatch Pickles [A] 1978 [4][5]

From John Stetson Barry:

He lived in Scituate, and was a man of considerable note. His name occurs quite frequently on the Church Records. Thus, in 1702 - 3, Samuel Stetson, Peter Colemore, and William Perry, were chosen to attend to the sale of a parcel of land belonging to the Church. He was chosen with Mr. Cushing, and Dea. James Torrcy, to make the rate in 1703. In 1707 he was on a Committee with Ensign Clapp, to see the town about changing the locality of a road. He was chosen with two others, in 1709 - 10, to see about clearing and fencing the parsonage land. And from 1719 to 1722, he was chosen to make the rates -- J.S. Barry [1] Birth

"Sergeant" Samuel Stetson was born in Jun 1646 [2], and baptized 12 Jul 1646, the fourth child of Cornet Robert Stetson and Honour(Tucker) Stetson (From Scituate Town Records, and 2nd Church of Scituate [3]).

Residence

In 1700, Cornet Robert Stetson deeded the house and farm in which Samuel and his family were living, apparently since his marriage in 1678.[7][3] Occupation

According to O.F. Stetson, "Samuel's name appears frequently on church and town records. As early as 1692 he was connected with the second saw mill on the '3rd Herring Brook.' (near Church Hill) This continued in his family for 142 years -- four generations" [7], and was known as "Jonah's Mill" for over a century [4].

Military Service

Not sure where the rank of Sergeant appeared from, no record in Barry's book except the title. Probably was part of the Canadian Expedition, or a member of the Cornet's Troop of Horse [5]

Research Notes

  • Stetson Kindred Genealogical Index: 1-4
  • Sgt Samuel Stetson's house is wrapped, prior to its undergoing renovation and is presently located adjacent to the Park at Stetson Meadows in Norwell, Massachusetts. It has lately been moved to a park in Norwell and is still awaiting restoration. -- rsl Dec 2020.
  • A. daughter of Jonas and Alice (Hatch) Pickles
  • B. Not sure if he was married twice. "The Descendants..." [6] and The monograph on Samuel Stetson [4] only mentions Lydia (Pickles) Stetson as the mother of his 13 Children. It is very possible that all of the wives listed here are actually Lydia Hatch Pickles, mother of his children. -- rsl 5/2019
