About Sherman Willard Boone
Obituary: May 27, 1936
ENTIRE STATE MOURNS DEATH OF DR. S.W. BOONE; Funeral Held Friday, Largely Attended
In the passing of Dr. Sherman W. Boone, the Town, County and State lost a most valuable citizen. Aside from his success as a physician and surgeon, the territory named by no means covers the extend of his acquaintances, for he was known far and wide in his profession. Personally, he was genial and likeable, therefore was very popular among his friends, and to say he will be missed is speaking mildly.
Dr. Boone was born August 12th 1859 at Fredericton, N.B. He was the only son of Richardson and Annis Sherley Boone. He had three sisters, Mrs. Ada Hagerman of Keswick who is still living, Mrs. Herbert Currie of Cambridge, Mass. who died in November 1887, Annis, who died in 1871.The Doctor's mother died early in November, 1887, a few weeks after the Doctor came to Presque Isle to practice. His father died in 1928 at the age of 94 years.
Dr. Boone is survived by his widows, whose maiden name was Miss Elizabeth {Louise} Day Bird. Their marriage took place February 15, 1888. Five children blessed their union, all of whom are living. They are, Annis, now Mrs. George R. Cook of Presque Isle; Frank L. a well known contractor of Presque Isle; Dr. Ralph Boone, a dentist living in Caribou; Dr. Storer W. Boone of Presque Isle and Margaret, now Mrs. Waugh Parsons of Presque Isle. There are thirteen grandchildren.
Dr. Boone received his early education in the schools of Fredericton. He was graduated from the University of New Brunswick in 1883 and received his M.D. degree from McGill university in 1887. He located in Keswick, N.B. for a short period of time, then moved to Presque Isle and practiced medicine here continuously until 1932, at which date he retired.
His was a life characterized by self sacrificed and kindly deed to the poor and unfortunate; no summons, night or day, ever being laid aside, but responded to the same deep interest as manifested in remunerative cases. Those who knew him best could testify to his generosity, and to the hardships he braved in the earlier history of the town, facing winter storms with horse and pung before the advent of the automobile. Long with his memory be cherished by the many grateful patients who were attended.
Dr. Boone was affiliated with several orders. He was a 32nd degree Mason and Shriner. He was a Past Master of the Trinity Lodge, 130 F & A.M. of Presque Isle, and a member of the Fellowship of American College of Surgeons. He served 21 years on the Board of Directors of the Aroostook County Red Cross Society.
Dr. Boone's death May 27th, 1936 came quite suddenly. He passed away very peacefully in his 77th year. Funeral services were held from his late home the following Friday afternoon at two o'clock. The very large attendance and the great profusion of beautiful floral tributes bore silent testimony of the love and high regard in which he was held.
The officiating clergymen were Rev. Hazen F. Rigby of the Episcopal Church of Caribou, and the Rev. H.B. Pulsifer of the St. John's Church in Presque Isle. The Honorary pall bearers were Dr. H.D. McManus of Washburn, Dr. H.F. Kalloch and Dr. W.G. Chamberlain of Fort Fairfield; Dr. A.B. Haggerthy of Ashland; Dr. B.A. Puddinton of Grand Falls; Dr. E.H. Doble of Presque Isle; Dr. Kincaid of Mars Hill and Dr. Mitchell of Houlton.
The active pall bearers were Frank L. Boone, Dr. Ralph W. Boone , Dr. Storer W. Boone, the three sons; Geo. R. Cook, Vaughn W. Parsons, two sons-in-law and Dr. E.B. Griffiths, a nephew.
The funeral arrangements were in charge of the undertakers R.W. Wight. The Masonic burial service was read by Past Master Leon S. Howe of Houlton at the grave in Fairmont cemetery. Interment was in the family lot
