About Susan Hawthorne Pierce

Susan Pierce, dau. of Kirk Dearborn Pierce and Mary Collins, was b. in Hillsborough, New Hampshire on Dec. 16,1880. She lived all her life in Hillsboro. She d. Feb. 1,1974 at the NH State Hospital in Concord, New Hampshire and is buried at Pine Hill Cemetery, Hillsboro, NH.

'At some point in time she adopted the middle name of Hawthorne and retained that the rest of her life.'

Grand niece of Pres Franklin Pierce, Susan and her sister, daughters of Kirk Pierce and Mary Collins Pierce, lived their lives at the Pierce Homestead in Hillsboro NH..

Well respected by the Hillsborough community they both were active in local events.

The Homestead was donated to the State of New Hampshire. Restored in 1945-50 and again in the early 1960's, it was presented to the National Register of Historic Places for approval as a Historical Home and was given Historic Status on July 4,1961 and accepted by the National Register on Nov 24.1978. The Pierce sisters served as hostesses at the Homestead for over 40 years and participated greatly in the towns Centennial Program in 1953. Both received commendations from Gov John King for their services to the State of NH.

Susan herself was a school teacher for many years in the Hillsboro area, a member of the New Hampshire Teachers Assoc, the Eunice Baldwin Chapter of the DAR, a charter and lifelong member of the NH Historical Society and a member of the Ladies Aid Society.
