Thomas Cleland, here treated, is the sixth son of James Cleland, Merchant in Edinburgh and his wife Helen Selkirk He was born before 6 January 1710, the date upon which his baptism was registered at Edinburgh in Midlothian, Scotland. [National Records of Scotland, Edinburgh Baptisms, reference OPR. 685/1/15] His father left him forty pounds in his last will and testament dated 15 September 1748. [NRS: CC8/8/114]

His Father's Last Will and Testament

James Cleland, here treated, died on 14 November 1752. He made his last will and testament on 15 September 1748, at his house in Corstorphine near Edinburgh. He nominated his youngest daughter Margaret Cleland to be his only executor and sole legator "in all & sundry his moveables & personall estate." The inventory of his moveable estate was given up by his son-in-law John Dunsmuir, merchant burgess of Edinburgh, the husband of Margaret Cleland.

James Cleland, merchant in Edinburgh left (1) one thousand merks to Thomas Cleland, Saddler in Edinburgh, his son: "as the remains of his portion of a bond of provision" and (2) one thousand merks Scots money to the heirs of the deceased George Gordon, writer to the Signet: "as the remains of the tocher granted by me to the said deceased Katharine Cleland his wife & my daughter by their contract of marriage." He also left a number of other legacies. (3) "one thousand merks Scots money to Charles Bruce, glazier in Edinburgh, "as the remains of the tocher provided by me with Helen Cleland his wife & my daughter by their contract of marriage" (4) five hundred merks Scots money to the said Thomas Cleland "my third son" or his heirs and assignees" (5) "forty pounds Sterling to Samuel Cleland "my youngest son." (6) "five hundred merks to James Bruce "third son to the sd Helen Cleland my daughter procreate betwext her & Charles Bruce her husband" whom failing by decease to Margaret and Katharine Bruce his sisters" (7) "five hundred merks Scots money to James Gordon "son to the deceased Katharine Cleland my eldest daughter procreated betwixt her & the deceast George Gordon, writer to the signet, her husband" and failing him to John Gordon "third lawfull son to the said Katharine Clend & George Gordon." In the event of the failure by decease of any or all of the legatees, the money gifted to them was to pass to Margaret Cleland "my youngest daughter her heirs & assigneys." Confirmation was granted to Margaret Cleland on 24 August 1753.
