This gentleman, who was bred to the bar, filled the office of recorder of York and Hull, and was subsequently appointed by James I. attorney-general to the court at York, receiving, at the same time, the honor of knighthood. - The first of this family of whom we have any authentic record was John Dalton, a Hull merchant, who died in 1458, leaving two sons. The elder, Thomas Dalton, was sheriff in 1484, and twice mayor of Hull, in 1489 and 1499. He died in 1502, and was buried in Holy Trinity Church, where by his will a chantry was founded in his name. In this will, which is dated 1497, and is remarkably devout, .... etc.
- It is recorded of his mother, Joan, that she married, secondly, John Whitfield, Mayor of Hull (1472), and, thirdly, Sir Richard Yorke, M.P., Alderman of York, after whose death she took the vow of celibacy!
- The younger son, John Dalton, merchant and Alderman, was elected Sheriff in 1482, and Mayor of Hull in 1487. He also served in the latter office during part of 1494, on the death of Ralph Langton, and was elected Mayor for the

- third time in 1495, dying during his Mayoralty. He married Katherine,* daughter of Robert Alcock, Mayor of Hull in 1480, the brother of the famous founder of the Grammar School. .... Thomas Dalton, the third son of the last-named John Dalton, was Sheriff of Hull in 1523, and twice Mayor, viz. : in 1535 and 1547. A curious incident .... He married a daughter of Thomas Wilkinson, by whom he had four sons and four daughters; he died

- in 1556, and was buried with his ancestors in Holy Trinity Church. His second son, Robert, was an Alderman of Hull, and Mayor in 1557 and 1567. The third son, Thomas Dalton, of Hull and Sutton, was an opulent merchant of the Staple and Merchant Adventurer. He was Sheriff of Hull in 1550, and thrice Mayor, viz.: in 1554, 1560, and 1569. He appears in Glover's visitation of 1584, with Thomas Alured of the Charter house, they being the only gentlemen of Hull who entered their pedigrees on that occasion. .... He died in 1590, and was buried near the Communion rails in Holy Trinity Church, where is yet be seen his gravestone, in good preservation, bearing this inscription: .... This Tho' Dalton first married Ann Walker widow by whom he had no children, & after married Ann Tirwhit daughter to Sr. Rob: Tirwhit of Ketlbie knight & by her had six sonnes & thre daughter vidz Rob: John William Philip Edw: & Tho: Ann Eliz: & Susanna. He was wise honest & bountifull. He died being of the age of 74 ....

He married into the ancient family of Constable, his wife being Elizabeth, daoughter and co-heir of Ralph Constable of North Park, in Holderness, and niece of Sir John Constable of Halsham and Burton Constable. - appear to have married or left issue. The children all seem to have followed their mother's religion. The second son, Robert, was a Carthusian monk of Newport, in Flanders; the fourth, John, settled at Barton-on-Humber; the fifth was Sheriff of Hill in 1557; and the sixth, James, was a secular priest.

- Going back again to the younger branch we find the most prominent member of the family of the Thomas Dalton who married Anne Tyrwhitt, was William, the third son. .... etc.

- .... was knighted at Whitehall, 28th April, 1629. He married Theophane Booth, of the ancient family of Booth, of Killingholm, Lincolnshire. Sir William Dalton died in January, 1649, and was buried at York Minster. He had one son and one daughter. Sir William's son, Lieut.-Colonel John Dalton, was mortally wounded at Burton-on-Trent, while conducting Queen Henrietta from Bridlington to Oxford. He also lied buried in York Minster. He left two sons, William and Thomas. The elder, knighted in 1665, was the father of Sir Marmaduke Dalton and Sir Charles Dalton, Gentleman Usher of the Black Rod, and the Rev. Darcy Dalton; to two sons of which last-named the estates eventually and successively fell, passing by the marriage of Mary Dalton, the sole heir of this branch of the family, (1792) to the Gales of Scruton. The younger son, Thomas, married as his brother had done, a daughter of Sir Marmaduke Wyvill, Bart., and was founder of a long line of soldiers.
