About Thomas Lea
Thomas Lea owned a slave, Kizzy Waller, by whom he had a son, George Lea, known as Chicken George Lea.
There was at one point some controversy as to whether this Thomas Lea did, in fact, own a slave known as Kizzy Waller [see, for example, the following article: https://www.historicpathways.com/download/rootsnfaction.pdf]; however, this controversy was dissolved on the PBS genealogical research show FINDING YOUR ROOTS WITH HENRY LOUIS GATES JR, which hosted the DNA tracing and family tree of celebrity guest Alex Haley, noted for his book and TV series ROOTS. The research proved that Alex Haley is in fact the 2nd great grandson of 'Chicken' George Lea by Thomas Lea and Kizzy Waller.
