About Thomas Proctor Ryland
Thomas was the eldest of eleven children. He pre-deceased his father. Susannah, his sister tells us that he lived a life of suffering which was nobly and patiently born. He loved above all things the word of God, which was his constant guide and consolation. He knew much of it by heart. The bible given to him by his grandmother, Mrs Susanna Proctor, was found under his pillow, upon which he passed away in his sleep on 23rd March 1873, at his home at Great Barr, where he had spent several happy years. This home was Pheasy Farm, now the location of the Pheasy Farm housing estate and part of Birmingham. We are told that Thomas rented the fishing and shooting of the nearby Great Barr estate and that they had many happy family meetings associated with the locality which often afforded them much pleasure.
According to the census for 1871 his youngest brother Sidney Proctor Ryland paid a visit to see him.
