About Uretta Damaris Riddle
While Reuben was busy with the mines and his other sideoccupations,Urettawas at home raising seven children. To make extramoney, she solda muchneeded commodity to the miners, milk and eggs. Shealso wasbuilding up aherd of herefords. After Reuben's death, Uretta and the boys ranched full timeonpropertythat later would become the Petan near Tuscarora Nevada.Afterthe harshwinter of 1889-90, she realized that they would need alargerplace wherethey could grow enough feed to get their stock through rough winters. Once thereservationwasestablished and Idaho became a state, land on the Idahoside ofthereservation was opened to homesteading. This was where theRiddlefamilyheaded. Selling their land in Nevada, they left the graves of beloved Reuben and son Fred andmovedtothe Duck Valley in newly organized Idaho. Frank remainedinTuscarorawith his new bride, Delia. Uretta homesteaded at the UDwithGrant andGrace. Harry took land at what is now the II Bar and George homesteaded at what is now theairstripbehindthe store at Riddle, ID. Later, Frank and Delia and theiryoungson, Earl, set up a place at the YY partway between the store andthe UD.Grace married Augustas (Gus) Stone and homesteaded between the YY and the store. Uretta was the first post mistress of Riddle. During the Indian Uprising of the1890's Urettawas never bothered by the marauding Indians because she already hadathriving business selling butter and cheese to them. In late 1898 Uretta decided to visit her family in the midwest. She had sisters and brothers in Michigan and Kansas. Uretta boarded a train and set off on her visit. At some point she had a tombstonemade for Reuben and Fred's grave. The stone was sent back to Riddle and Uretta continued her visit. She became ill on the train and after arrivingat thehome of her sister in Independance, Kansas, Uretta died. Here she was buried, far from the final resting place she had envisioned with her husband and sons. That tombstone, destined for the graves of Reuben and Fred in Nevada, never made it to it's intended location. It laid in the barnyard of the YY until1985, when, due to the extensive efforts of Kristy Bruin, Ginger DeMeyer and Lynn Riddle, a family reunion was organized and the stone was finally placed between the graves. A wrought iron fence and memorial marker accompany the grave stone and protect the several graves. These graves were finally located after numerous deeds between Uretta andthepurchasersof her land, were studied and it was noted that a small piece of land hadbeen excepted from the sale. Kristy and Ginger found this quarter acre after walking the land and coming upon the impressions of five or six graves. Sincethetombstonehad Reuben on one side and Fred on the other, it was easytodecide whichof the graves were the correct ones. All the graves wereina line excepttwo, laying head to head. Uretta was described as strong-willed but also as a woman of culture and great dignity. Her pictures show her to be a woman ofgraceand beautyinto her last years.
