About Wallace Stanton Walsh, Sr.
When Wallace registered for the U.S. Army Draft on October 16, 1940, he was living in Corpus Christi, Nueces County, Texas, and was 5'-9" tall, weighed 142 pounds, and had blue eyes, brown hair and a dark complexion. He was 33 years old, having been born March 14, 1907, in Ashland, Wisconsin, and was the son of John W. Walsh and Ida May Reiss. Wallace served in the U.S. Army during World War II from October 3, 1942, to October 3, 1945.
Previously in the 1910 U.S. Federal Census, their family was listed as follows: John W., 34, Ida, 29, Lucille, 5, and Wallace, 3 years old. They were living at 941 20th Street in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. John and Ida had been married for 10 years, had given birth to 3 children, 2 of whom were still living. John was born in Australia, Mississippi, his father in New York and his mother in Mississippi. Ida and both of her parents were born in Wisconsin, as were both of her children. John was working as a sign painter. Most of their neighbors were of German ancestry and worked at various professions including a salesman for a brewery, a house painter, a dressmaker, a jewelry repair man, a tinsmith for the railroad, a paper cutter in a box factory, a machinist in an auto factory, a foreman in the cement industry, a hardwood finisher in a chair factory, a machinist in a machine shop, an errand boy for a jewelry store, an elevator man in a tannery, and a machine hand in the woodworking industry.
In the 1920 census they were living in Madison, Wisconsin, in a home located at 1012 E. Gorham Street, and the family was listed as follows: John, 42, Ida, 39, Lucille, 15, and Wallace, 12. John was working as the deputy collector of the revenue office, and Ida was working as a collector at the revenue office.
By 1930 the family had moved to Corpus Christi, Nueces County, Texas, and they were living at 1224 4th Street, a home they were renting for $35 per month. They had a radio in their home. They were listed in the census record as follows: John, 52, Ida, 49, Lucille W. Weimer, 22, (their married daughter), and her daughter, Barbara Weimer, 2 years old, Wallace Walsh, 22, and a "roomer" and a 39-year old widower, Hume Jarrell, who was from Alabama. John was working as a salesman for an electric supplies company, and Wallace was working as an electrician in the electric wiring company. The "roomer" was working as an accountant for the state highway department.
In 1940 John, 64, and Ida, 59, were living alone in Nueces County, Texas, but no occupation was listed for either of them. Wallace was living alone at 173 Brackenridge Drive in Corpus Christi and was working as an electrician in the contracting industry. He had previously been living in Miami Beach, Florida, in 1935. For the 52 weeks he worked at 40 hours per week in 1939, his income was $2,000.
Wallace married Diana Corse, the daughter of Irvington Pemberton Corse and Angela Ritchie Nalle, of Philadelphia. They had one son, Thomas Dewey Walsh, in 1951, but Diana passed away in August of 1954 at the age of just 32 years old due to intercapillary glomerulosclerosis and diabetes mellitus. She was buried in the Riverside Cemetery in Cody, Wyoming.
In August of 1955 Wallace married Shirley Ann Harkness, and they had 5 children, 4 sons and a daughter. Both of Wallace's parents, John and Ida passed away in 1965 in Cody, Park County, Wyoming, Ida on October 1st and John on October 17th. Wallace died September 20, 1987, in Cody, Wyoming, but his wife Shirley, is still living at this time. Shirley and Wallace are the parents of my cousin, Jerald Charles Eubank's wife, Susan Walsh Eubank, who live in Hawaii.
