About William Aras James Fowlkes

William Aras James Fowlkes (son of William Fowlkes and Rebecca Hanks) born 11 Feb 1815 in Sullivan Co., TN.

  • He had 9 siblings
  • died Oct 1896.
  • He married Mary Ann Lane in 1841.

From David Andrew Sturgill's Book:

William was born in Sullivan Co, TN, but moved to Wythe Co., VA with his father's family before 1820 and to Grayson Co. (area now Carroll Co.) in 1825.

No record of the marriage of William to Mary Ann Lane has been found, but they were probably married in Wythe Co or Grayson Co. about 1840.

In July 1843 William AJ bought a tract of land on Dog Creek in present Allegheny Co., NC from Charles Toliver. On this farm he built a home which was once considered to be one of the finest homes in the county and is still standing.

The framework of this house is hand hewn timbers put together with morticed and pegged joints. The big stone chimney is a work of art.

William and Mary Ann were both buried in a small family cemetery on this farm, but their graves were marked only with field stones which have been removed and the exact grave sites are lost. These graves were about fifty yards east of the site of the old Toliver schoolhouse which is also gone.
William AJ Fowlkes was the first elected Clerk of Court in Allegheny Co., NC and served several terms in this office.

He was also a teacher at the old Delphia School, operated a country store, and served as postmaster in the old Delphia Post Office.

He was also a successful farmer, and served his community as a Justice of the Peace.
