About William Kirkwood

William 1915 - 2007 "Caddy Bill" to many Born in Deer Lodge, MB on Wednesday, May 5, 1915, and raised in Calgary, Bill's life concluded in his 91st year, on Monday, April 9, 2007 at Wentworth Manor, The Court - Main. He was preceded in death by his wife Joyce (nee Purdy); mother Mary Ann (nee Costello); father James Kirkwood; sister Elizabeth (Betty) Hill and brother James V. (Jim) Kirkwood. Left are the loved ones his mind could not remember, his children, two daughters, Pat Hooper of Calgary, Betty Jo and son-in-law Ron Mitchell of Morinville; his son Jimmy of Okotoks, seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, his sister-in-law Elsie Kirkwood, one niece and one nephew. During his life he worked for many years as a Machinist by trade for Calgary Iron Works Ltd., fabricating structural steel... making waterworks fittings and fire hydrants. In the time of the Second World War, Bill worked for a short period of time with Imperial Oil Ltd. in Norman Wells, NWT. Following the dissolution of the Iron Works, he worked for Phoenix Pipe, then IPSCO until his retirement in 1982. He will be fondly remembered for many things, especially the many hours spent studying racing forms and going to the track to play "the ponies" in Calgary, Trout Springs, Edmonton and Spokane; driving late model Cadillacs, (hence the name Caddy Bill), and channel surfing. Bill was most fortunate to have the kindness and care of a special person, his first born granddaughter Susan Hooper, who unselfishly gave of her time for the past fourteen years, handling all aspects of his affairs and advocating on his behalf. He was a man who had different and very strong opinions about many things, enjoyed lively discussions, but could be witty and generous with others. In honouring Bill's wishes, there will be no Funeral or Memorial Service. Instead, those who knew him are requested to make their farewells in their own way, in their own hearts. Cremation will take place. A private family Inurnment will take place at a later date in the Kirkwood family plot at Queen's Park Cemetery.
