William Saunders, I
- Son of Thomas Saunders and Joanna Pollard
William Saunders, I
From the marriage of Thomas Saunders of Charlewood and his wife Joan there was a son William Saunders, who married Joan, the daughter of Thomas Carew of Bedington. This William Saunders died on 10 Aug., 1481, and his wife Joan in 1470, as appears by a brass formerly on a tombstone at Charlwood, bearing this inscription, which has fortunately been copied in the Harleian MS., No. 1397:-
Orate pro animabus Will'i Saunder generos' qui ob' 10 die mensis Augusti A.D. Mill'o CCCCLXXXI et Joha' nx' ejus qu\'e6 ob' ... die mensis .... A. 1470, quor' a'iabus p'pl'cietur Deus. Amen.
'Another inscription preserved in the same MS. records the death of John Saunders, probably a son or brother of William Saunders. It reads:
Hic jacet magist' Joh'es Saunder qui ob' 3 die Febr. A. D. 1477, The Harleian M.S., No 1397, in the British Museum, states that the following inscription was to be seen on the church porch of Charlewood in 1622:-This inscription, unfortunately, does not seem to have borne any date, but it evidently records the death of Thomas Saunders of Charlwood and his wife Joan:
'Orate pro anima(bus) Thome Sander et Johannae uxoris eius et pro animabus omnium fidelium defunctorum.'

By Richard atte Wodde of Ifeld to William Saunder of Cherlewode, gent., and Richard Saunder of Cherlewode, husbandman
Perhaps two sons: William died 1477 and Richard died 1479?
....Henry Saunder of Ewell, who made his will in 1518, was a younger son of William Saunder of Charlwood, ...An ample account of the Charlwood Saunders is given in The Free Men of Charlwood. Particulars in his will show that Henry was a rich man whose interests ... These Surrey estates were left as in the case of Batailles Manor to William, the testator's younger son. In default of the latter having a male heir this property was to pass to the children of Henry's nephew, Nicholas Saunder of Charlwood, just as the provision made for the succession of the Ewell property, with the noteworthy distinction that Henry's elder son Nicholas was entirely omitted from the succession. Henry Saunder re-settled his lands by a deed of October 1517 less than a year before he made his will. He appointed ten trustees for fulfilment of this deed and the same ten were named in the will as trustees for that part of his lands which did not comprise the Ewell, Epsom and Chessington estates. Seven of these trustees in fulfilment of his father's will granted William Saunder in 1529 lands, tenements, etc., in Charlwood, Newdigate and Ockley.
Saunders Family History
"... William Saundre evidently was the firstborn son of Thomas and Joanna Saundre. He was born about 1415, and no doubt lived his early years at Charlwood Place (Bull Head Farm) in Charlwood. We suppose William had an upbringing of some modest personal ease and social standing, as his father possessed land freely and had gained such wealth as was possible for yeomen of the time. But nothing specific is known about William until the time of his marriage.
At about age twenty-three, William married Joan Carew of Beddington Manor in the north of Surrey. As Carew's Beddington Manor lay adjacent to Sanderstead in Wallinglon Hundred in northern Surrey, the Saundres (i.e., the de Sandersteads) and Carews certainly were not strangers, having been neighbors for generations. ...
With Thomas Saundre, yeoman, amassing what he could of personal wealth and William marrying well and gaining the title of gentleman, a new Saundre family of Charlwood began to find its way into prominence. William and Joan were married about 1437, when he was twenty-three and she fifteen, a not unusually early age for marriage at the time. They probably lived at Charlwood after the marriage as William was heir to the property upon his father's death around 1450 or shortly thereafter. By about 1438, the first of their many children were born. ...
