Civil War Veteran Drummer U.S. Army, Co. E, 63rd N.Y. Inf. 1864 - 1865

"Townville, April 14 - After a long illness William Stockwell died at his home on East Fremont street Friday afternoon, April 8. The deceased was born in Oswego, NY, Aug 17, 1847. At the outbreak of the civil war he enlisted as drummer boy in Company E, Sixty-third NY Vol infantry. He was married in 1866 to Miss Lucy Brown. Besides his wife he leaves two children, Mrs Nettie Hopkins and Mr Clyde Stockwell of Townville, Pa; one sister, Mrs Sarah Cox, of Oil City, and five brothers, J A, of Sononna, Cal; S B, of South Dakota; C E, L D and F B of Boone county, Ill, and a large number of friends to mourn his loss. The funeral services were held from his late residence Sunday afternoon, the Rev W R King being in charge of the services. The pallbearers were a detail from Lieutenant William J Gleason Post No 96, GAR, of which the deceased was a member. The ritualistic services of the order were observed at the grave. Interment was in Townville cemetery." (Titusville Morning Herald, Apr 15, 1904, p.7)
