Lapin, Norrbottenin ja Finnmarkin alueiden sukututkimusprojekti
Släktforskningsprojekt för Lapplands, Norrbottens och Finnmarks områden
Slektforskningsprosjekt for Lappland, Norrbotten og Finnmark regioner
Genealogy project for Lapland, Norrbotten and Finnmark regions
Lappi, Norrbotten & Finnmark Project in Brief
Regions
The project's regions include the current region of Lapland in Finland, the province of Norrbotten in Sweden and the county of Finnmark in Norway.
Principle
The genealogy tree comprises over 100 year old information (the stem tree) and newer information. Living persons are not visible outside of the program in the Internet, unless desired - but the stem tree, however, is visible. One can add persons who belong to the close family. Remember to ask a permission from living persons for them to be added to the tree. If you have experience in genealogy, you are welcome to build the stem tree also.

(3) Tell that you have registered and you would like to join the project in email address: geni-suojarvi@googlegroups.com. Include "Lapland, Norrbotten and Finnmark Project" in the message title. After this, we will send you more detailed instructions and invitations.
Quality
In the project, we would like to pay special attention to the quality of information and the visibility of source information. Any errors should be corrected. To help in corrections, we would like to receive information about errors. We wish that the profiles to be added to the project should include enough source information so that other users can identify the person in question unambiguously (e.g. a link to the baptismal records, family cencus, communion book, etc.). We recommend the use of original source documents (birth, death, etc.). Information should be checked from the original source documents, to the latest when there are contradictory information.
In the beginning, not all profile is required to include source information - for example, source documentation in the profile of the family's father can be enough. Our goal is that eventually all profiles have source information. The objective is as high as possible quality in the tree!
Name Standard
If the person is Finnish, we request that his or her name is written in Finnish normalized form on the Finnish and English pages of the profile, if the person was speaking Finnish. The name is written is it is in Swedish-language baptismal records on the Swedish page. Further name forms, like different name forms in communion books can be added to the "Also known as" field. Normalized name formats enable more effective merging in Geni. Different name formats are not recommended to be separated with slash (like "Valborg/Valpuri/Wappu/Walborg Kinnunen/Kinnutar/Kinnu") - this only increases the need for merging work.
According to the Western Finnish tradition, patronym names were used, and in addition, the house names was used as an additional name. The difference between an additional name and a surname is that the former one changed (for both men and women) according to the living place, and it was not inherited like surnames. The additional name can be added, however, to the surname field in Geni. If there are several additional names, they are written sequentially. The names should not be combined with a slash or hyphen. Soldier names can also be added to the surname field. The first Surname Law in Finland came into force in 1920. After this, a surname became obligatory for all.
If there was a surname in use already in old times (Eastern Finnish tradition, hand workers, etc.), only her original surname is written for woman, because women kept their surnames throughout their lives. There two exceptions to the practice: the women whose surname were changed to the husband's surname in the church books (this tradition became more popular in upper classes of the society in 1800's) and after 1920 died women, whose surnames were changed to be the same as their husbands' surnames.
