Along with the other Swedish municipalities, the present municipality was created in connection with the nationwide local government reform of 1971. First, the seat of the municipality, the twon of Jönköping consists nowadays of not just the former Jönköping (pop. ca 100,000) but also of the former town of Huskvarna (pop. ca. 25,000) as well as Norrahammar as well as Hovslätt and Lockebo.
The second largest concentration of population resides in Bankeryd in which Trånghalla is included. Some 10,000 individuals reside in this area. This is followed by Taberg which also includes Månsarp.
These are followed by Tenhult, Gränna and Odensjö, which includes Barnarp.
For the rest, the nomenclature is clear. The rest of the municipality consists of Kaxholmen, Lekeryd, Bottnaryd, Skärstad, Ölmstad, Örserum, Tunnerstad, Öggestorp, Kortebo, Gissby and Ryd.
