South African Crime Victims, (mostly robbery related)

Crime in South Africa is at epidemic proportions, Many who immigrate cite crime as one of the primary reasons for leaving South Africa.

IRR crime analyst Kerwin Lebone said: “South Africans live with horrific levels of violent crime. While the murder rate has fallen since 1994, at 31.9 per 100 000 people, it remains one of the highest in the world.”

According to Lebone, South Africa’s murder rate is:

  • almost 29 times higher than that in Australia, which is at 1.1 per 100 000 people.
  • almost 30 times higher than that in the United Kingdom, and 45 times higher that that in Germany, which are at 1.0 and 0.7 per 100 000 people respectively.
  • almost nine times higher than that in the United States of America, which is at 3.8 per 100 000 people.

According to the report “Exploring the extent of and circumstances surrounding housebreaking/burglary and home robbery” released by Statistics South Africa today, it is estimated that 670 000 households in South Africa experienced housebreaking/burglary while about 160 000 households experienced home robberies in 2015/16. Housebreaking/burglary accounted for over 50% of all crimes experienced by households, followed by home robbery which was experienced by 12% of households in South Africa. Although the prevalence of housebreaking/burglary and home robbery declined during the last five years, the proportion of households that think that crime is increasing has been growing.

Updated 2024: Crime in South Africa includes all violent and non-violent crimes that take place in the country of South Africa, or otherwise within its jurisdiction. When compared to other countries South Africa has notably high rates of violent crime and has a reputation for consistently having one of the highest murder rates in the world. The country also experiences high rates of organised crime relative to other countries. *https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crime_in_South_Africa

Aim and Scope

This project is intended to record as many victims of South African Suburban and Rural Home Invasions (Farm Attacks) as possible, as well as other Robbery related murders ("Raubmord" in German, and NOT Social Fabric Crimes) and link them to our Geni tree. This project is intended as a Master Project Index. (Please add profiles here, so that we are able to see total numbers of profiles, but also to the relevant year.)

How to Participate

Add the names of victims with their age and date of death (Or PM/email Donovan Penaluna: donno(at)axxess.co.za). If the person is on Geni please add the link to their profile, and make this a bold entry. If the person is not on Geni but has an external source, add a link to an external source but do not make the link bold. This will help us to see who still needs to be added/found on Geni.
