
Mishra(s) are Brahmins of North/Eastern part of India, including Bihar, UP, Odisha and MP states. In Odisha it is spelt generally as Mishra. There are further subcasts in brahmin according to place of origin, such as Maithili, Kanyakubja, Saryuparin, etc. Also there are different category of Brahmins on the basis of knowledge of Vedas, such as "Dwivedi", "Trivedi", "Chaturvedi". One more category is according to the work done by Brahmins, such as Vajpayee brahmins doing Ashwamedha ( Vajpeya - Horse ), Agnihotri brahmins doing agnihotra/Homam, while Mishra brahmins did all kinds of Brahminic duties and hence known as Mishr or Mishra. Mishra origin is mostly tracked to Maithili and they are known to have knowledge of all the four Vedas.
