Oey (pronounced "we") (simplified Chinese: 黄) is a Chinese Indonesian surname (with a Dutch spelling) that means "golden yellow", or literally "yellow."
Oey ancestors were sea faring Chinese who settled in Indonesia before Dutch colonization. The most common direct Chinese to English spelling of the name is Huang. An alternate English spelling is Wee (common in Singapore). Most Oey descendants living in Indonesia changed their surname to Indonesian ones because of Cabinet Presidium Decision 127 of 1966 -- an anti-Chinese law that mandated that ethnic Chinese living in Indonesia adopt Indonesian-sounding names.
