About the Ordaniel surname

The original name of the Ordaniel/ Ordanel clan, was 'Loyola'. The name Loyola was taken from 'Saint Ignatius of Loyola. Ignatius was a Spanish knight from a local Basque noble family, hermit, priest since 1537, and theologian, who founded the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) and, on 19 April 1541, became its first Superior General. Ignatius emerged as a religious leader during the Counter-Reformation. Loyola's devotion to the Catholic Church was characterized by absolute obedience to the Pope.

Genetic evidence has shown that the Ordaniels have no link to Spanish ancestry. Filipinos named themselves after the saints, such as 'Saint Ignatius Loyola'. This has caused consternation among the Spanish authorities during that period in time. Apparently, Christianization worked much too well and there were soon too many Santoses, San Joses, San Antonios, and San Buenaventuras to suit those in power.

They were forced to change their last names unless they could prove that their family had been using it for several generations. We can assume that Mariano Loyola could not provide concrete evidence, and thus had to change his name to 'Ordañel'. There are three variations to the name, but all three family names are genetically linked. The original being 'Ordañel', and the others being 'Ordaniel', and 'Ordanel'. There is no history on why Mariano chose this name.
