Poddars mainly belong to Shekhawati region of Rajasthan. They belong to Bania, Agarwals, Marwadi Caste of Rajasthan. Their Gotra is Bansal.
They have their origin in Fatehpur, a town in the Sikar district of Indian state Rajasthan. It is part of the Shekhawati region. The 'Poddar' is derived from original word 'Potedar' meaning Treasurer/Financier. The title of 'Potedar' was given to them by Nawab/King of Fatehpur as they were Financier to Nawab. Currently It is a business community and spread all over India.
