The family name "Roy Chowdhury" came about from the Knigthood titles conferred by the British Raj to the largest, most powerful and most loyal landlord families of undivided Bengal in the early 18th century. Equal to Rai Bahadur's of the north Indian Belt. Our family was the No. 1 "Roychowdhury" family of Nijburunga, Cylhet, now Bangladesh. My grandfather and family moved to Silchar, Assam after the 1930's division of Bengal. Our family owned over 14000 Bigha's of agricultural land and was one of the richest landlords of their times. We are originally "Mishro's - Batsaya Gotra".
