•• SHIROLE PATIL FAMILY ••
•• SHIVAJINAGAR (BHAMBURDE) PUNE CITY ••
The Shiroles are a prominent family from Pune, India. Their lineage traces back to the village of Lohom in Bhor taluka, Pune district. Their surname, originally Shiravle, is derived from Shiravle Buruj, one of the seven bastions of Rohida Fort. Their illustrious history is marked by bravery and service to the Maratha Empire.
Ranoji Shirole, a valiant warrior, fought alongside the Marathas against the Adilshahi forces in the Battle of Pawankhind (Ghodkhind) on July 13th, 1660. His unwavering courage and ultimate sacrifice earned him recognition from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj himself, who bestowed upon the Shirole family Inam lands in Bhambwade Village (Bhamburde), now known as Shivajinagar in Pune.
Between 1717-1720, the financially struggling Bahirat Patil family, the then-patils of Bhambwade, sold half of their Patilki rights to the Shiroles. In exchange, the Shiroles provided monetary and grain assistance to the Bahirats. This transaction solidified the Shiroles' position as the main patils of Bhambwade.
Ranoji's son Ratnoji had two sons, Yekoji and Moraji. Yekoji's three sons were Jesoji, Jogoji, and Girjoji, while Moraji had five sons named Sultanji, Ranoji, Shekhoji, Anandrao, and Govindrao. A century later, in the Third Battle of Panipat on January 14th, 1761, seven Shirole warriors fought with valor and met their demise. As a testament to their bravery, Peshwa Madhavrao granted them Inam lands in Pimple Gurav, Pimpri-Chinchwad City (Pune), Members from the Shirole Family have also fought in The Battle of Kunjpura (1760) against Afghan Durrani Army and The Battle of Kharda (1795) against Nizam of Hyderabad both the battles were victorious/were won by The Maratha Army.
The Shiroles hold the titles of Naik, Patil (Watandar), Inamdar, and Binniwale. Their unwavering loyalty to the Maratha Empire and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's descendants earned them the special blessings of Sadhguru Shri Jangli Maharaj. They continue to honor this legacy by celebrating the Urus/Sandal ceremony every year.
The Shirole family's contributions to Pune's development are undeniable. Their active involvement in politics, generous land donations to institutions like Fergusson College, Ranade Institute, Agriculture College, and the Police Line Area, and their support for organizations like All India Radio Pune, Modern College and School, Deccan Gymkhana Club and Society, Government Polytechnic College, Hotel Management College, various housing societies, Pune Municipal Corporation, JW Marriott Hotel, and Pantaloons Mall stand as testaments to their unwavering commitment to the city's progress.
The Shirole family's legacy is one of valor, service, and philanthropy. Their contributions to Pune's history and development are deeply etched in the city's fabric. They remain a well-respected and prominent family, revered for their unwavering commitment to their community and their nation.
