
The Sood surname is believed to have originated from the Persian word sūd, which means "benefit, gain, interest". The Soods are an Indian surname from the Punjab region and are associated with a mercantile community. The Soods are also thought to represent the warriors and knights caste in India.
The Sood dynasty's capital was Patten in Sind for eight generations, then moved to Alwar, and finally to Amar Kot, which is now in Pakistan. According to some documents, 101 Sood Rajas ruled in various states. In total, there were fifty-two subcastes:
