Tungekar is Marahti language word meaning Resident of Tunge. The Tungekars are an Arab Origined family of Traders who came from a place called TUNGE aome 250 years back and settled in Uran, District Raigadh, Maharashtra near Mumbai. The family was engaged in diversified line of trade not only in Uran where they owned Salt Pans for manufacturing Salt from Sea Water but they had business houses in Mumbai, Kolkata, Madras, Cochin and Karachi and many other cities of Undivided India and were trading in Grains, Spices and Textiles.
