He served as county treasurer, as state senator 1861-1863, and as president of the Board of Education of the Ottawa schools 1871-1880. He married Mary Chambers, daughter of Matthew and Mary Chambers, 23 Nov 1842 in Putnam Co., OH; she died at the age of twenty-two 10 Feb 1845 at Kalida, OH. They had one son, Edward Settle Godfrey, born 9 Oct 1843. Charles married Mrs Jane (Goble) Braugher 4 June 1846 in Putnam Co., OH; she had a daughter Elizabeth Braugher born c1842. Jane was born c1822 in Washington Co., PA, the daughter of Daniel L. and Nancy Goble. Charles and Jane had three children: Evaline born c1851; Zoe born c1855 married Alexander Ogle 1st Lt. - Bartholomew Chambers Godfrey (24 Jan 1845- 31 Jan 1845) Mary died 24 Jan 1845 in Kalida during the birth of their second child.
Charles married second to Jane Goble on Jun 5 1846. Jane was born on 27 June 1821, the daughter of Daniel & Elizabeth Goble. Jane was married to her first husband Allen Braucher on 21 Dec 1840. They had two children-Nancy and Elizabeth before Allen died in 1843.
